The Case

In August 2008, Alex W. (a German citizen, born in Perm, Russia) insulted Marwa Elsherbiny, who was wearing an Islamic headscarf in a public playground for children in Dresden. He shouted at her words like “islamist” and “terrorist”.
For that crime, he was charged and sentenced to a fine of 780 Euro but the prosecution appealed that decision for a stronger punishment.
At the following court hearing on the 1st of July 2009 before the Regional Court Dresden, Alex W. strode across the courtroom and attacked Marwa Elsherbiny with a knife (18 cm / 7 inch long blade), which he had concealed in his backpack.
Marwa received multiple stab wounds in the upper body and arm (at least 16). While trying to protect his wife the husband Elwy Ali-Okaz was also stabbed and heavily injured. A police officer, who was in the court building testifying in an unrelated case was called to the scene but mistook Elwy Ali-Okaz for the attacker and shot him in the lower leg.

Alex W. is now indicted for murder and attempted murder before the Regional Court Dresden.
